Is Your Skin at Risk? The Surprising Truth About Sunscreen!

Hey Beautiful,
According to The Skin Cancer Foundation, approximately 90% of
The sun is like a giant star that keeps our planet warm and bright! But just like too much cake can give you a tummy ache, too much sun can hurt your skin.
The good news is, sunscreen is like a superhero shield that protects your skin from the sun's rays!
So here are some easy tips to keep your skin healthy and happy:
1. Is Sunscreen for Everyone?
Do you have super light skin or really dark skin? It doesn't matter! Everyone needs sunscreen because the sun can damage anyone's skin. Think of sunscreen like wearing sunglasses for your whole body.
2. Is Sunscreen Safe?
Sunscreen goes through lots of testing because it's considered a drug. While there have been some questions raised about certain sunscreens we've mentioned here in the past, it's important to remember that the best sunscreen is the one you'll actually use!
3. Sunblock vs. Reapply
Sunscreen isn't magic. You can't just spray it on once and forget it. You need to put it on 15 minutes before going outside so it has a chance to coat your skin cells evenly and then reapply every two hours, or more if you're sweating or swimming. Think of it like refreshing your shield throughout the day to keep it strong!
4. SPF: Sun Protection Factor
SPF is like a number code for sunscreen. The higher the number, the more protection it gives your skin from the sun's rays. Most of the time, SPF 30 is strong enough to play outside.
5. Water-Resistant, Not Waterproof!
Sunscreen can't handle a water balloon fight! Even if you're using "water resistant" sunscreen you still need to reapply it every two hours to stay protected when you're sweating or swimming.
Bonus Tips!
- The sun (even the heat alone!) can cause hyperpigmentation, so wear a UV visor when possible (it's like a hat for your face!) and carry a portable fan to stay cool. Big sunglasses are a great extra way to protect your eyes!
- Here are some sunscreen recommendations for different needs:
- For Acne-Prone Skin: Try a water-based sunscreen like this one from Nivea. It's lightweight and won't clog your pores.
- For Busy Bees: A lotion-based sunscreen like this one from Elta MD is perfect if you want an all in one moisturizer and sunscreen. This Elta MD sunscreen is ideal for oily and/or sensitive skin types and conditions such as Rosacea.
- For Smoother Looking Skin: A primer-based sunscreen like this one from Murad helps make your skin feel and look silky smooth before you put on makeup.
- Always apply sunscreen as the LAST step in your skincare routine.
- Don't forget your LIPS when playing outdoors (this is what I use when I go on my daily walks)!
Remember, sunscreen is your skin's best friend on sunny and cloudy days!
The more you know the more you glow!
