5 Summer Beauty Tips I Shared on Studio 512 (TV!)

Caio, Beautiful!
Recently, I had the chance to join Studio 512 again on KXAN in Austin to talk about something I care deeply about: helping women protect their skin, their glow, and their confidence during the summer months.
And while summer can be beautiful, too much sunshine, travel, pool days, patio lunches, and even weekend getaways can also be rough on mature skin.
Heat, sweat, UV exposure, dehydration, and extra outdoor time can all show up on the skin in ways we don't always expect.
For women over 40, summer beauty is not just about looking glowing. It's about protecting your skin barrier, preventing unnecessary damage, and making small choices that help your skin age in a healthier, more supported way.
As an oncology-certified, licensed esthetician and over-40 beauty expert, I always want beauty advice to feel practical, realistic, and doable. You don't need a complicated 12-step routine to take better care of your skin in summer. Sometimes the smallest habits make the biggest difference.
Here are a few of the summer beauty tips I shared on the show.
Most of us remember sunscreen on our face, but summer exposure does not stop there.
Your scalp, lips, chest, hands, feet, and eye area need protection too. These areas are often overlooked, yet they can be some of the first places to show signs of sun damage, dryness, irritation, and premature aging.
If you're going to be outside for long periods of time, think beyond your face. A hat, sunglasses, protective lip color or balm, and remembering sunscreen on areas like the tops of your feet can make a big difference.
This is especially important if you are wearing sandals, driving, walking, gardening, or spending time near water where UV exposure can feel even stronger.
Makeup with SPF can be a nice bonus, but it should not be your only form of sun protection if you are spending extended time outdoors.
The problem is that most people do not apply enough makeup to get the full SPF protection listed on the label. And once sweat, heat, and daily movement enter the picture, that coverage becomes even less reliable.
My rule of thumb is simple: sunscreen should be the last step in your skincare routine before makeup.
Think of makeup with SPF as extra support, not your entire summer skin strategy.
This is one of those things many women notice but do not always connect.
Heat (not just direct sun) can make redness, dark spots, melasma, puffiness, and irritation look more pronounced. So if your skin seems more reactive in the summer, you're not imagining it.
For mature or sensitive skin, summer can be a lot. The goal isn't to fight your skin, but simply support it.
That means keeping your routine gentle, staying consistent with barrier-supporting products, protecting your skin from too much sun exposure, and not overdoing harsh exfoliation when your skin is already dealing with heat and sweat.
When your skin feels stressed, simple is usually better.
Summer beauty is not only about facial skincare.
Your lips can become dry, cracked, or more vulnerable to sun exposure. Your cuticles and nails can also become dehydrated from sun, swimming, travel, hand washing, and changes in routine.
A nourishing lip product, a little cuticle care, and a moisturizing balm or butter can go a long way when you are on the go.
This is where I love keeping small, travel-ready products close by. When something fits easily in your bag, you are more likely to actually use it.
Sunglasses aren"t just a style choice. They help protect the delicate eye area, which is one of the first places many women notice dryness, fine lines, puffiness, and sun-related changes.
They also help reduce squinting, which can contribute to expression lines over time.
Studio 512 segment recap / real-life reminders:
Protect your skin before the damage happens.
Pay attention to the areas you usually forget.
Don't let trends distract you from the basics that actually matter.
And most importantly, don't wait until your skin is struggling to start caring for it differently.
Remember, the more you know, the more you glow!
