Beauty Boosting Secrets and Your Wellbeing After 40

Life has a way of throwing us curveballs when we least expect it, doesn't it?

For me, the past two years was a testament to that.

More recently, I was sick for a couple of months, grappling with pain and low energy that seemed to linger far longer than expected. Just as I was beginning to recover, I faced an even deeper emotional blow—the loss of my sweet pug, Anoo, whom I'd had with me for almost 18 years!

He'd been sick for two years, and during that time, I woke up every night, often multiple times a night, to care for him. The chronic sleep disruption, combined with the emotional strain of watching him decline, took a toll on both my mental health and my body's ability to heal.

But through the darkness, I found a light—a renewed commitment to my health and wellbeing.

This year, I've been on a mission to prioritize my mental and physical well-being again, and I've discovered some game-changers that I just have to share with you. These aren't just about looking good; they're about feeling more vibrant, energized, and truly happy from the inside out. 

 So, grab your coffee (or green juice!), and let's dive into my secrets for ageless beauty and well-being!

 1. Hydration: Upgrading My Water Game

  • The Challenge: I used to just drink… whatever. Tap water, bottled water… I didn't really think about it because I grew up drinking well water. But you face different challenges in the city.
  • The Change: Switching to a cleaner water system has been HUGE. I feel so much more hydrated and my skin is clearer! Not to mention, it tastes better!

2. Supplements: Nourishing from Within

  • The Challenge: Overwhelmed by the sheer number of supplements out there? Where do you even start?
  • The Change: I focus on high-quality supplements tailored to my needs.
  • My Experience: Since working with my IHP (integrative health professional) in 2020 I've really started to pay special attention to what I want out of a supplement, much like I do my skincare - which includes researching the brand itself and making sure it's 3rd party tested and doesn't include a bunch of fillers.

3. Celery Juice: The Green Juice Boost

  • The Challenge: Getting my preferred daily dose of celery juice, which can be so helpful for healing, can be tough sometimes.
  • The Change: Drinking celery juice a few times a week in the AM has been a game-changer.
  • My Experience: I buy organic celery juice from my local HEB, because it can get expensive if you're not careful and time consuming if you juice it yourself. 

4. Rebounding: Bouncing My Way to Better Health

  • The Challenge: Finding time for exercise can be a struggle.
  • The Change: Rebounding is quick, fun, and effective!
  • My Experience: I rebound every morning for at least one minute to get me up and going, and when the weather's less than desirable outside, rebounding has my back! I often turn on the tube and watch my favorite guilty pleasure reality TV show to help pass the time for 15 minutes.  

5. Walking: Improving my Mental Health

  • The Challenge: Making any exercise you love a consistent habit.
  • The Change: Daily walks have become my meditation.
  • My Experience: I no longer exercise for anything other than my mental health.  Wellness hack: I make it a priority to walk for 5 minutes a day and usually walk closer to 30 because it feels so good to move my body and I end up sleeping better!!  I save my favorite audio books, podcasts of overdue bff phone calls for the walk so I look forward to it! 

6. Laser Focus: Glowing Skin from Within

  • The Challenge: My skin was starting to become more dull and wrinkly, since I'd been distracted and neglecting it.
  • The Change: Incorporating a laser face mask into my routine has been a life-saver.
  • My Experience: I personally use the JOVS face mask that was gifted to me because it uses laser instead of LED, which makes it stronger and more effective. 

Bonus skincare tip: After using your device, remember to rehydrate your skin. Make sure to use your serum(s), moisturizer and facial oil (in that order).

7. Electrolyte Essentials: Staying Balanced

  • The Challenge: Feeling sluggish and dehydrated, too?
  • The Change: Adding daily electrolytes to my water has been an essential piece to my healing journey, helping to keep me and my skin hydrated, and to flush out the bad stuff.
  • My Experience: I drink one lower sodium, sugar free (stevia sweetened) electrolyte drink a day, usually after I have my coffee with cream and MCT oil to help kickstart my day!  

8. Adaptogens: Stress-Reducing Superheroes 

  • The Challenge: Managing stress and boosting my immune system has especially been a challenge this past year.
  • The Change: Exploring the world of adaptogens has been so incredible. 
  • My Experience: Since incorporating CBD and immune boosting mushrooms into my daily routine I feel more balanced. 9. Affirmation Action: Positive Vibes Only

  • The Challenge: Negative self-talk creeping in again? I feel you.

Bonus wellness tip! Try stacking your wellness routine. Most of us don't have time to realistically spend an hour doing 5 different things in the morning to kick off our day!  So take 5-10 minutes instead and stack your wellness preferences, such as rebounding while listening to positive affirmations, taking a salt bath, going for a walk or using your LED or laser mask while listening to healing music and/or meditating.

10. MCT Marvel: Inflammation Fighter

  • The Challenge: Dealing with random pains/inflammation, like me?
  • The Change: Adding MCT oil to my diet seems to be helping.
  • My Experience: So far, I've noticed a reduction in some of the pain and stiffness I've been feeling in my knees for a very long time (I'm hoping it helps with my eye issues, too!). I mix one teaspoon into my morning coffee with heavy cream and sidetone - it doesn't usually interrupt your fast (if you're on one).  

11. Probiotics: Gut Love

Fun fact: Did you know that about 70% of your immune system is located in your gut?

  • The Challenge: Improving my gut health has been tricky because it's hard to know what supplements really work.
  • The Change: Enjoying food-based probiotics like kimchi has been such an easy and fun way to incorporate probiotics the natural way without worrying about supplements! 
  • My Experience: Since incorporating natural probiotics like Kimchi and sauerkraut into my weekly diet my stomach has been a lot happier.

12. Fasting: Resetting and Rejuvenating

  • The Challenge: Exploring different dietary approaches can be overwhelming & costly.
  • The Change: Discovering and incorporating fasting into my routine has been life-changing and it's FREE!
  • My Experience:  I used to think fasting just meant not eating for days but since educating myself on the intricacies of it, especially fasting as a woman, I've customized a routine that's helped me sleep and focus better and lose the bloat and pain from a large fibroid I've suffered with for years.
