Can Calming Your Nervous System Help Your Skin Glow?

Ciao, Beautiful!

Beauty isn’t always about what we put on our skin!

Sometimes, it’s about what we allow ourselves to release so that we can have a little reset. :)

My longtime friend, Teresa, with Roots & Remedy recently gave me a beautiful healing session that included sound therapy. I went into it curious, but I walked away with a reminder I think many of us need: healing comes in all shapes and sizes.

It can look like a facial or a massage. It can sound like the vibration of a drum or singing bowl. It can feel like ten quiet minutes at the end of the day when no one needs anything from you.

And sometimes, the most meaningful beauty treatment is the one that never touches your skin at all.

As an esthetician, I’ve always believed that our skin tells a story. It can reflect the season we’re in, the sleep we’re getting, hormonal changes, our environment and, yes, the stress we’re carrying.

Our skin isn’t separate from the rest of us. Research into the brain-skin connection has found that ongoing psychological stress can affect the skin barrier, wound healing and inflammatory activity. That doesn’t mean every breakout, dry patch or new line is caused by stress. It simply means that caring for our nervous system can be a meaningful part of caring for our skin, too.

Sound therapy isn’t a substitute for skincare or medical care, of course. But practices that help us slow down may support better rest, less tension and a greater sense of well-being... all things that can make it easier for us to feel and look more like ourselves.

That's the kind of glow we don’t talk about enough.

There's no single “right” way to relax or reconnect with yourself. What feels restorative to one person may not speak to another, and that’s okay. The invitation is simply to notice what helps your body relax.

For some women, it may be massage, the comfort of intentional touch and permission to stop holding everything so tightly.

For others, it may be sonic healing or sound therapy, using rhythm, tone and vibration to create a peaceful, meditative experience.

It might also be breathwork, prayer, a warm bath, time outdoors, gentle stretching or sitting in silence before the rest of the house wakes up.

The method matters less than the message you're giving yourself: I'm allowed to pause. I'm worthy of care. I don’t have to earn rest.

So my simple advice is to give yourself at least 10 minutes of "you time" each night.

Self-care doesn’t have to become another elaborate routine on your list. Just start with ten minutes at night and make those minutes yours.

Put down your phone. Lower the lights. Choose soft music, calming tones or complete silence... whatever helps your mind begin to settle.

Take a minute to breathe slowly and unclench the places where you tend to hold tension: your jaw, shoulders, hands and belly.

Then turn your skincare into a small act of connection rather than something you rush through. After moisturizer, warm a few drops of QUINNtessential Glow Oil between your fingertips and gently press it into your face and neck. Use slow, deliberate movements and let yourself notice how your skin feels beneath your hands.

Next, massage Glow Oil Body Serum onto clean, slightly damp skin, or layer it over your body moisturizer to help seal in moisture. Spend a little extra time on the places that often get overlooked, like your arms, elbows, hands, chest, knees and feet.

This isn't about perfect technique. It’s about being present in your own body.

Finish with one or two quiet minutes. Breathe and listen. And let the day be over!

Ten minutes may not change everything happening around you, but it can change the way you meet yourself within it.

Teresa’s session reminded me that we don’t always know what we need until we give ourselves enough quiet to feel it.

Her work at Roots & Remedy brings together traditional and modern practices, including massage and bodywork, rebozo therapy, sound healing, energy work and other personalized modalities. Sessions are available in South Austin, with concierge options also offered.

If you’re in the Austin area and feel curious, you can learn more or book through Roots & Remedy, connect with Teresa on Instagram at @rootsandremedy, or email rootsandremedy@gmail.com.

You don’t need to wait until you’re completely depleted to care for yourself. Sometimes the most beautiful thing you can do is pause long enough to come home to yourself.

Your skin may appreciate it, but more importantly, you will.

The more you know, the more you glow!

With love,

Jentri

P.S. Feel free to steal my PM beauty reset routine anytime:

  1. I take magnesium to help me relax.

  2. I put my phone out of sight—or at least turn it facedown—and take off my watch so I’m not tempted to check either one.

  3. We eat dinner at the table while listening to jazz.

  4. If the weather is nice, we take a quick walk after dinner. If not, I retreat to the bath with a podcast or music.

  5. I sip my nighttime drink, made with calming ingredients to help take the edge off any lingering anxiety, while watching something funny before bed.

I’m often guilty of saying, “I feel anxious,” and then immediately turning on a murder-mystery crime show. So I’ve made myself one rule: No matter what I watch at night, I end with something funny.

And when I really want to go the extra mile, I listen to a guided sleep meditation. Here’s one I love.
