Don't Make Eye Area Mistakes That Age You!

Hey Beautiful!
Our eyes are often the first to show signs of aging.
From crow's feet to dark circles, the delicate skin around our eyes can be quite sensitive.
Here's some common mistakes that can accelerate the aging process and tips on how to prevent them.
Eye Hygiene: More Than Just Cleaning
While most of us know to clean our faces, proper eye hygiene is often overlooked.
Here are some key points to remember:
- Use the right products: Opt for gentle, hypoallergenic cleansers designed for the eye area. My favorite eye care brand is OCuSOFT and I use their eyelid cleansing pads regularly to avoid eye infections and maintain healthy eyes.
- Clean your makeup brushes regularly: Bacteria can accumulate on makeup brushes, leading to eye infections and irritation. In most cases, you can use soap and water.
- Wash your pillowcases frequently: Sleeping on dirty pillowcases can transfer bacteria and dirt to your face.
- Avoid sleeping with wet hair: Wet hair can create a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi, which can irritate the skin around your eyes.
Brush cleansing & eyelid hack: you can use Hypochlorous Acid spray daily to help kill bacteria.
Cleansing 101: Use your micellar water, eye cleansing balm or oil cleanser first, and then follow it up with a gentle cleanser (I love this one by Aveeno) OR a proper eyelid cleansing scrub, like this one from OCuSOFT, to ensure you remove ALL of the dirt and debris! This eyelid scrub is particularly helpful if you're prone to eye infections, styes or recovering from an eye virus (disclaimer: this is not medical advice).
Travel tip: When traveling or as the second step in your eye makeup removal routine, try these no-rinse eye makeup remover pads!
Gentle Care for Sensitive Skin
- Avoid rubbing your eyes: Rubbing can cause hyperpigmentation and contribute to wrinkles.
- Be gentle with your skin: Pulling or tugging at the skin can also lead to premature aging.
Holistic Tips for Younger-Looking Eyes
- Facial massage: Increasing blood flow to the area can help improve circulation and promote healthy skin.
- Exercise: Regular physical activity can boost overall health and reduce stress, which can contribute to aging.
- Acupressure: Applying pressure to specific points on the face can help improve blood flow and reduce puffiness.
Beauty myth! Skin doesn't need to breath, contrary to popular belief. Fresh oxygen comes from your blood (not being makeup free!) so increasing your blood flow is a free, easy way to help improve the appearance of your eye area!
Makeup Matters After 40
- Less is more: Wearing too much eye makeup can make you look older because it settles into fine lines and wrinkles.
- Use eye cream or balm: Applying the right hydrating eye cream or balm before and after makeup can help prevent creasing. This On The Go Eye Balm is one of my faves because you can use it before/after applying eye makeup - make sure and use this direct link for a special discount or use code JENTRI15 at checkout.
- Setting spray: For extra hold, pat a setting spray over areas prone to creasing (this is one of my faves).
Primer tip: Whatever primer you use on your face you can use under your eye area - try our best selling Priming Duo for a smooth, soft, and healthy under eye glow!
Sun Protection: You Know, But Are You Doing It?
- Wear sunscreen: Protect your eyes and the surrounding skin from harmful UV rays.
- Choose the right formula: Look for a water-based sunscreen, instead of oil-based, when using it around your eye area and make sure to stay above your eyelid fold when applying it on your upper eye area.
Addressing Specific Concerns
- Retinoids: While retinoids can be effective for reducing wrinkles, they can also dry out the eye area. If you experience dryness, consider using a gentle Retinol that's made for sensitive skin instead of a prescription. Or opt for formulas that focus on using peptides and other hydrating ingredients, like our Restorative PM Eye Cream. To save money & time, consider investing in our Age Defying PM Kit!
- Milia: These small, white bumps can be confused with other eye area concerns. But the good news is, gentle exfoliation and retinoids can help treat most under eye bumps that aren't life threatening.
Pro tip: OTC Differin may help with Milia.
By following these tips and making mindful choices, you can help keep your eyes looking youthful and vibrant.
Remember, consistency is key when it comes to skincare.
The more you know the more you glow!
