Exfoliation Tips for Women Over 40: How to Get Smoother Skin Without Overdoing It

Caio, Beautiful!

If you’re over 40, exfoliation can be one of the most helpful things you do for your skin… but it can also be one of the easiest steps to get wrong.

A lot of women think exfoliation has to mean scrubbing, tingling, peeling, or doing something dramatic to see results. I don’t believe that. In my experience, the best approach is usually the one that respects your skin barrier and keeps things simple.

As we get older, skin cell turnover tends to slow down. That can show up as dullness, rough texture, congestion, uneven tone, or makeup that just doesn’t seem to sit as smoothly as it used to. Gentle exfoliation can help remove some of that buildup so skin looks fresher, feels softer, and reflects light a little better. It can also help other skincare products apply more evenly.

The key word here is gentle.

I’m not a fan of beating up the skin in the name of “results.” Especially if your skin is sensitive, reactive, mature, or breakout-prone, too much exfoliation can leave you looking more irritated instead of more radiant. That’s why I tend to prefer simple, barrier-aware products that do the job without turning your face into a science experiment.

One of my favorite ways to keep skin balanced is to start with a cleanser that feels calming and supportive. The Aveeno Calm + Restore Nourishing Oat Cleanser is one I really like for that reason. It’s made for sensitive skin, and the whole Calm + Restore collection is positioned around soothing and supporting the skin barrier, which makes it a nice companion when you’re using exfoliating products in your routine.

When it comes to exfoliation itself, I think it helps to know that not all exfoliants do the same thing.

Some are better for clogged pores and breakouts. Some are better for rough texture and surface dullness. Some are best for people who need a gentler, slower approach. That’s why I like having different options depending on what your skin is dealing with.

One classic exfoliant that so many people know and love is Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant. This is a leave-on salicylic acid product that’s designed to help unclog pores and smooth texture. Paula’s Choice positions it for daily use and highlights concerns like enlarged pores, uneven texture, and even wrinkles, which is part of why it has stayed popular for so long.

If your skin tends to be more breakout-prone and you want an exfoliating cleanser, I’ve also been using the REMEDY Gel-to-Foam Cleanser with Salicylic Acid. It’s described as a gentle gel-to-foam cleanser for normal-to-oily skin that exfoliates, removes dirt and dead skin cells, unclogs pores, and helps maintain a healthy skin barrier. I like that it gives you that exfoliating support in a wash-off format, which can feel easier and less intimidating for some people.

And for those who deal with recurring breakouts and want something a little more targeted, Murad Biome-Balancing Clear & Prevent Acne Treatment Serum is another one worth knowing about. Murad says it’s formulated to clear different types of breakouts and help prevent relapses, using salicylic acid and mandelic acid along with ingredients meant to support a healthier-looking skin environment. That makes it a good option for someone who feels like they need more than a basic exfoliating step.

The important thing is not to use everything all at once.

That’s where women can get into trouble. They start with an exfoliating cleanser, then add a leave-on acid, then layer on another acne treatment, and suddenly their skin is tight, flaky, red, and confused.

My advice is to keep it simple.

If you’re new to exfoliation, start with one exfoliating product a few nights a week and see how your skin responds. If you’re using a leave-on exfoliant, keep the rest of your routine gentle and supportive. If your skin is already dry or sensitive, that matters even more.

Bonus beauty tip: For your body, use a gentle body scrub made with sugar instead of salt to avoid stinging or burning. Our Body Scrub Duo exfoliates, cleanses and hydrates for smoother and softer looking skin!

A few good rules to keep in mind:

Use exfoliation at night when possible.
Don’t combine too many “active” products in one routine (I alternative my nights between using exfoliating serums and Retinol)
Pay attention to stinging, tightness, or extra redness (this is NOT a sign it's working, but rather it's irritating)
And always make sure the rest of your routine is helping support the skin barrier, not stripping it down.

That’s one reason I love a more anti-trend approach to beauty.

You don't need a 12-step routine. You do not need every buzzy product on the market. And you definitely do not need to make your skin angry in order to make it look better.

A thoughtful cleanser, the right exfoliating product for your skin type, and a barrier-supportive routine can go a long way.

If you want a simple place to start, my Anti-Trend Beauty Kit was created for women who want classic, supportive beauty without all the noise. It’s a great complement to a gentle exfoliation routine because it helps keep the focus where it belongs: healthy-looking skin that feels comfortable, balanced, and beautiful.

Because in my world, good skin is not about doing the most.
It’s about doing what makes sense.

The more you know, the more you glow.

With love,

Jentri
