How to Fix Dark Spots & Brighten Your Skin

Posted by JQ on Aug 21st 2024

Hey Beautiful!

Those stubborn dark spots (aka Hyperpigmentation) that seem to appear out of nowhere can be so frustrating!

Chances are, while you may seem to notice them all at once, they've been marinating for a long time.

But the good news is, with a deeper understanding of this condition, you can effectively target and treat it.

So let’s dive in and discover how you can achieve a more radiant complexion!

Three main types of hyperpigmentation:

  • Sun Damage (Most common): These are the classic brown spots often referred to as age spots. Caused by excessive sun exposure, they’re a result of increased melanin production to protect the skin.
  • Melasma: This is a common condition characterized by brown or grayish-brown patches on the face. Hormonal changes, pregnancy, and sun exposure are often contributing factors.
  • Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH): This occurs after skin inflammation, such as acne, picking at the skin, eczema, or an injury. It’s essentially your skin’s response to trauma, leading to excess melanin production.

The bright side of your dark spots:

While hyperpigmentation can be stubborn, there are effective approaches to minimize its appearance.

Exfoliation: Gentle exfoliation helps to slough off dead skin cells, revealing a brighter complexion. Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) like lactic acid and glycolic acid are excellent choices for mature skin.

Vitamin C: A potent antioxidant, vitamin C helps to inhibit melanin production and brighten the skin. Our Vitamin C + Correcting Serum, created especially for mature, sensitive skin, delivers a stable form of vitamin C to promote a more even skin tone.

Retinol: This powerhouse ingredient stimulates cell turnover and collagen production, helping to fade dark spots and improve skin texture. Our Advanced Retinol Night Cream is formulated specifically for mature, sensitive skin to deliver visible results without irritation.

Sun Protection: Protecting your skin from the sun is crucial in preventing further hyperpigmentation. Always apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher.

Other skin brightening ingredients to consider: Azelaic Acid (for Rosacea & PIH), Tranexamic Acid (for melanoma), and Hydroquinone (treats most types of hyperpigmentation)

Your journey to brighter skin:

Remember, consistency is key when treating hyperpigmentation and no two faces are the same. It may take several weeks or even months to see significant improvement. Be patient, and don’t forget to consult with a dermatologist for personalized advice if needed.

Bonus brightening tip!

Consider alternating between your acid treatment(s) and prescription Retinoids for the best results (do not use at the same time).

In example, you can alternate your nighttime treatment - using your Glycolic or Lactic Acid serum one night and your Retinoid the next night for a couple of weeks to help expedite the brightening process!
