My Honest 3-Year Castor Oil Review: What Stayed, What Changed and How I Use It Now

Ciao, Beautiful!

Three years ago, I started experimenting with castor oil in more ways than I can probably count.

I tried it on my skin, around my eyes, on my lips, on my nails and anywhere else its thick, conditioning texture seemed like it might be helpful. Some of those uses became lasting habits. Others gradually faded from my routine as my skin, body and needs began to change.

That may be my biggest takeaway after three years: a product doesn’t have to do everything to still deserve a place in your home.

I don’t use castor oil for every beauty concern anymore, but there are still a few occasions when I’m incredibly grateful to have it nearby.

During my first year, I was curious about nearly every traditional and trending use for castor oil.

Rather than repeat all of those experiments here, I’ll link my original castor oil review at the end of this article.

What interests me most today isn’t how many different ways castor oil can possibly be used. It’s which of those uses actually stayed with me after the initial excitement wore off.

One reason I still keep castor oil in my home is for the occasional stubborn ache or uncomfortable area.

Sometimes it’s a sore knee. Other times, my fibroid feels like it is “on fire.” That is simply how I describe the sharp, shooting discomfort I occasionally experience when the area feels especially irritated.

I cannot tell you why castor oil seems to help me in those moments, and I am not claiming that it treats fibroids, inflammation or any medical condition. I can only tell you what I have personally experienced.

There have been times when nothing else seemed to provide much comfort, so I applied castor oil topically over the area. Later, I realized I had completely forgotten about the ache and that continues to surprise me!

Of course, new, severe, unusual or persistent pain should always be discussed with a qualified medical professional. I would never use castor oil as a substitute for finding out what is causing a symptom.

Although I use pure castor oil less frequently than I did three years ago, I still appreciate its unique properties as an ingredient.

Castor oil is naturally thick, rich and cushiony. It can help soften and condition dry-feeling areas, which makes it especially useful when blended into certain lip, nail and body products.

I enjoy mixing it with other oils rather than using it alone. Blending it creates a more elegant texture while still allowing castor oil to bring that comforting, protective quality to the formula.

It can be especially lovely for:

  • Dry-feeling lips

  • Rough cuticles

  • The skin surrounding the nails

  • Small areas that need extra conditioning

  • Adding richness to oil-based beauty formulations

For lips that need more than a quick swipe of oil, I also like using a complete treatment designed to soften and protect the delicate lip area. Our Barrier First Lip Treatment is made for those moments when lips feel dry, depleted or uncomfortable and need something more substantial than traditional lip balm (although The Good Stuff chapstick is pretty GREAT, too!).

Castor oil may help condition the surface, but a thoughtfully formulated lip treatment can provide a more complete approach to maintaining softness and supporting the lip barrier.

One of the biggest changes in my current routine is how I approach facial hydration.

During my first year of experimenting, I was more likely to use castor oil as a facial moisturizer or apply it to areas that felt especially dry.

Today, it's no longer the first thing I reach for.

I’m approaching 50, and my skin has naturally become drier as I’ve moved through hormonal changes. Like many women, I’ve noticed that my skin doesn’t just need more oil. It needs more water-based hydration, barrier support and consistent moisture.

This is where the difference between hydration and moisture becomes important.

A facial oil can help soften the skin and reduce the feeling of dryness, but it does not provide the same type of water-based hydration as a humectant serum.

That’s why I generally begin with our Hyaluronic Acid Serum. Hyaluronic acid helps attract and hold water at the skin’s surface, helping the complexion appear softer, smoother and more comfortably hydrated.

I then follow it with our Whipped Olive Face Butter.

Our Face Butter provides the nourishing, comforting layer my skin craves as it becomes drier with age. Its rich texture helps soften rough-feeling areas, support the skin’s protective moisture barrier and seal in the hydration applied underneath.

This combination gives my skin something castor oil alone cannot:

Hydration first, followed by moisture and barrier support.

I may occasionally use a small amount of castor oil in a blend or on an isolated dry area, but it is no longer my primary facial moisturizer.

Even though I don’t depend on castor oil for everyday facial hydration, that doesn’t mean I’ve stopped using oils on my face.

I simply choose oils based on how they are formulated and how they feel on mature, changing skin.

Our QUINNtessential Glow Oil, for example, was created as a complete facial oil rather than a single-ingredient experiment. It helps soften dry-feeling skin, replenish a depleted-looking complexion and leave the face with a healthy, conditioned glow.

I especially enjoy using a facial oil:

  • Over a hydrating serum

  • Mixed with moisturizer for additional richness

  • Pressed onto dry areas at night

  • During facial massage

  • When the skin feels depleted, tight or weather-stressed

The key is remembering that oil and hydration are not interchangeable.

For my skin, the most effective routine usually includes both.

I also experimented more with castor oil on my eyelids during my first year.

Today, I'm much more conservative.

I have dry eyes, and I now rely primarily on my Refresh lubricating eye drops (Costco has the best deal!) and warm compresses. These are more predictable for me and are specifically intended to support dry-eye symptoms.

I would never place ordinary cosmetic castor oil directly into the eye.

Nonsterile oils can migrate, cause blurred vision, irritate the eye or disrupt the tear film. Anyone interested in an eye drop containing castor oil should speak with an optometrist or ophthalmologist and use only a sterile product formulated specifically for ophthalmic use.

There's also an important difference between treating the eye itself and caring for the skin surrounding it.

The delicate skin around the eyes may benefit from a gentle, well-formulated product designed for that area. However, an eye-area skincare product should still be kept out of the eye and should never be treated as a replacement for appropriate dry-eye care.

After three years, I still believe castor oil can be a useful and versatile ingredient.

I just have a more realistic relationship with it now and a deep understanding that no one oil is intended to hydrate my face, manage my dry eyes, replace my moisturizer and solve every beauty concern that appears online. Instead, I use it selectively. :)

I still appreciate castor oil for:

  • Occasional topical comfort around an achy area

  • Blending into lip products

  • Conditioning cuticles and nail surrounds

  • Adding richness to certain oil-based formulas

  • Small areas that benefit from its thick, protective texture

For my everyday facial routine, I gravitate toward a hyaluronic-acid-based serum, a deeply moisturizing face cream and a complete facial oil when my skin needs additional nourishment.

Castor oil hasn't remained the answer to everything, but it has remained useful enough that I still keep a bottle in my beauty cabinet.

And after three years, I think that's a much more meaningful review than simply calling something a miracle.
