Simple Makeup Routine Over 40: The Primer and Concealer Hack We Swear By

Ciao, Beautiful!

There's something comforting about a beauty routine that doesn't ask too much of you.

My sister and I were raised by a mom who never made beauty feel fussy. She taught us that looking put together did not have to mean piling on product or standing in front of the mirror for an hour. Long before beauty became a nonstop stream of trends, tutorials, and ten-step routines, we learned to appreciate a more classic way of doing things.

And honestly, I think that served us well.

These days, beauty can feel noisy. There's always a new product, a new technique, or a new reason to think what you are already doing is not enough. But for a lot of women, especially when life is full, that kind of routine isn't realistic. My sister works in real estate, so she has to get ready quickly and still feel confident the minute she walks out the door. Most women I know can relate to that in one way or another.

That's why I still believe some of the best beauty tricks are the simplest ones.

One of our longtime favorites is using primer as the base of the look, then skipping foundation on lighter days and applying concealer only where it is actually needed. It's such an easy shift, but it can make your makeup feel lighter, fresher, and more natural. You still get a polished finish, but without that heavy, overdone look that so many women are trying to avoid.

My sister, Gabri, keeps it especially simple. A little Priming Duo, a touch of concealer, and she's good to go. For me, I usually follow that same idea and add mascara plus my Matte Beige Brow Highlighter (aka Eye Lift Stick) to wake up the eye area and make everything look a little more lifted and bright.

That's really the heart of the hack. You don't have to cover everything. You just have to be strategic.

I think that's where a lot of women find relief. Minimal beauty is not about giving up. It's not about doing the bare minimum because you do not care. It's about knowing what works, choosing products with intention, and letting a few smart steps do more of the heavy lifting.

That's also very much how I think about beauty at JQ. I am far more interested in fewer, better products than a crowded routine. I want makeup and skincare to support your skin, not compete with it. I want it to make sense for real life. And I want women to feel like they can look fresh, polished, and beautiful without needing a drawer full of products to get there.

Sometimes the best thing you can do is step back from all the noise and return to what actually works.

A good primer. A little concealer where you need it. A few thoughtful finishing touches. That's often more than enough.

And if you're standing in front of your mirror feeling overwhelmed by too many choices, take that as your sign to simplify.

Your routine doesn't need to be more complicated to be effective. In many cases, it just needs to be more intentional.

Start there.

And remember, the more you know, the more you glow!

With love,
