Why You Should Change Your Eye Area Routine After 40

Hey Beautiful!

Treating your eye area differently with skincare after the age of 40 is important because this area is particularly delicate and tends to show signs of aging more prominently.

Several factors contribute to the need for specialized eye area care:

  1. Thinning of the skin: As we age, the skin naturally becomes thinner and loses elasticity. The skin around the eyes is already thinner compared to other areas of the face, and this thinning can accelerate with age. Thinner skin is more susceptible to fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging, making it crucial to provide targeted care.
  2. Fine lines and wrinkles: The eye area is prone to developing fine lines and wrinkles due to repeated facial expressions, sun damage, and a decrease in collagen and elastin production. Additionally, the skin around the eyes lacks oil glands, making it more susceptible to dryness, which can exacerbate the appearance of lines. Using the right Retinol for mature skin around your eye area can be helpful, too.
  3. Dark circles and puffiness: Aging can lead to increased blood vessel fragility and reduced microcirculation, resulting in dark circles under the eyes. Puffiness or under-eye bags can also be more prominent due to a weakening of the muscles and connective tissues in the area. Using a skincare product with aloe or caffeine may be helpful with lessening the appearance of dark circles and puffiness.
  4. Eye strain and fatigue: With age, the muscles around the eyes may weaken, leading to eye strain and fatigue. This can be exacerbated by factors like extensive screen time, poor sleep habits, or other lifestyle factors. Treating this area with specific products can help alleviate these concerns. Using Castor Oil may help relieve dry eyes and soothe stressed eyes.

Here's some important considerations for eye area skincare after the age of 40:

  1. Moisturize: Hydrating the eye area is crucial to combat dryness and help minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Look for a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer, like our Whipped Olive Oil Face Butter, specifically formulated for sensitive skin and the delicate eye area.
  2. Use targeted eye creams or serums: Eye creams or serums are specially designed to address the specific concerns of the eye area. Look for products containing ingredients such as retinol, hyaluronic acid, peptides, antioxidants, and caffeine, which can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles, puffiness, and dark circles.
  3. Protect from the sun: UV damage accelerates skin aging, so it's important to protect the eye area with broad-spectrum sunscreen and sunglasses to shield against harmful UVA and UVB rays. Additionally, wearing a wide-brimmed hat can provide further protection.
  4. Gentle application: When applying skincare products to the eye area, use gentle tapping motions with your ring finger, as it applies less pressure than other fingers. Avoid tugging or pulling on the delicate skin, as this can lead to further damage.
  5. Get enough rest and manage stress: Prioritize getting enough sleep and manage stress levels, as both can impact the appearance of the eye area. Lack of sleep and high stress levels can contribute to dark circles, puffiness, and a tired appearance.

Applying eye makeup after the age of 40 also requires a few additional considerations to prevent creasing and achieve a youthful look.

What they don't tell you about eye makeup after 40 is that more makeup means more chances of your makeup creasing, no exceptions.

Primer helps smooth your skin's surface and helps keep your makeup in place, so it's always a wonderful choice for mature skin, BUT be careful of the amount of makeup you apply on top of it and where you apply said makeup.

While powder has certain benefits for certain applications, and a small amounts of powder can help set your makeup and negate oil at the time of application, it is -- no matter how you look at it -- still more makeup.  If you love wearing powder after 40, opt for a lightweight translucent one for best results.

Having said that, there's no powder in the world, regardless of how well it's marketed to you, that will prevent your wrinkles from being visible.

To ensure a smooth and long-lasting eye makeup application, follow these 4 easy steps:

  1. Moisturize: Start by applying a moisturizer specifically formulated for the eye area. This helps hydrate the skin, making it smoother and more receptive to makeup. Look for an eye cream that contains ingredients like hyaluronic acid or peptides to plump up the skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines.
  2. Primer: Next, apply your primer to create a smooth base for your eye makeup. Whatever you use on your face you can use under your eye area. Primer helps to even out the skin texture, minimizes the appearance of wrinkles, and enhances the longevity of your eye makeup. Choose a primer that is specifically designed for the eyes and apply it onto your eyelids and under the eyes.
  3. Creamy Concealer: Use a creamy concealer that's made for mature skin to hide any dark circles or discoloration around the eyes. Opt for a concealer, like our Photo Touch Concealer, that provides good coverage without drying out your under eye area. Dab a small amount of concealer onto the areas that need coverage and gently blend it using your ring finger or a soft brush. Make sure to blend it well into the skin for a natural finish.
  4. Setting Spray: To ensure that your eye makeup stays in place throughout the day and prevents creasing, finish with a light mist of setting spray. I personally like to spray it on my clean hand and then pat a little under my eye area instead of misting my entire face but it's a personal preference. One of my faves is POREfessional by Benefit This helps to lock in your makeup and increases its longevity.

Remember, taking good care of your eye area by following a consistent skincare routine and using products that are made for mature skin will also contribute to a more youthful appearance.

The more you know the more you glow!
