Why Your Over 40 Skincare Routine Isn’t Working Anymore (and How to Fix It)

Ciao, Beautiful.

There comes a point when the skincare routine you’ve relied on for years suddenly stops feeling like your routine.

The moisturizer you once loved doesn’t seem "rich" enough or the makeup that always looked smooth begins settling into places you never noticed before! Your skin may feel dry one day, sensitive the next and somehow, every new product promises to fix everything while leaving you even more confused!

It can make you feel a little stuck, right?

So much of the beauty industry is still built around becoming someone younger, trendier or entirely different.

First thing's first. You're not doing anything wrong.

Your skin is changing because you are changing. And learning how to care for it now isn’t about desperately trying to get back to where you were. It’s about meeting yourself where you are and creating a routine that supports your current needs.

When a trusted product stops giving you the same results, it’s easy to assume you need something newer, stronger or more complicated... but this usually isn't the case.

As we move through our 40s, 50s and beyond, our skin may not hold onto moisture as easily. It can feel less forgiving, more easily irritated and slower to bounce back after stress, travel, hormonal changes or a few nights of poor sleep.

That doesn’t necessarily mean you need to add to your routine or stop doing everything altogether.

In fact, this is often the time to do less, but do it more thoughtfully.

Instead of asking, “What’s the strongest product I can use?” try asking:

What would make my skin feel calm and supported today?

That one question can completely change the way you approach beauty.

And a "boring" skincare routine isn't always a bad thing. :)

Somewhere along the way, skincare became entertainment.

We were told we needed ten steps, several active ingredients, complicated schedules and a steady stream of new products arriving at our doors!

Your skin doesn’t need to be constantly surprised but it does needs consistency.

A “boring” routine might include a gentle cleanser, a hydrating serum, a nourishing moisturizer and sunscreen during the day. At night, it may be as simple as cleansing thoroughly and giving your skin the moisture and replenishment it has been asking for.

That may not sound very glamorous, but healthy routines are often beautifully uneventful.

There's confidence in using a product because your skin genuinely likes it and not because someone online told you that you were missing out if you didn't buy it.

Boring can simply mean calm and dependable.

So how do you know if it's time to change up your routine?

You don’t have to throw everything away and begin again. Start by paying attention to the little signals your skin is already giving you.

Your routine may need adjusting when:

  • Your skin feels tight shortly after cleansing.

  • Products you once tolerated suddenly sting or leave you red.

  • Makeup looks dry or uneven despite using the same application techniques.

  • Your moisturizer seems to disappear without leaving your skin comfortable.

  • You are using more products but not enjoying how your skin feels.

  • Your routine feels like a chore instead of an act of care.

Choose one concern to address first.

When everything feels wrong, changing five products at once usually makes it harder to understand what your skin actually needs. Simplify your routine, give it time and introduce changes slowly.

Getting unstuck doesn’t always require a dramatic transformation. Sometimes it begins with removing the things that are creating unnecessary noise.

Consider your current lifestyle.

Your routine should fit your current skin, schedule, energy and lifestyle.

Maybe you once enjoyed an elaborate nighttime ritual, but now you need something you can complete in five minutes. Maybe your skin used to tolerate frequent exfoliation, but now it responds better to softness and restraint. Maybe you used to focus almost entirely on correcting imperfections, and now you care more about comfort, hydration and glow.

If you're feeling overwhelmed about what to do next, start here with the basics, because after 40, our skin barrier needs to be a top priority!

A good routine should leave you feeling comforted and refreshed.

Try building your routine around three priorities:

1. Comfort

Your skin should not regularly burn, sting or feel painfully tight after your routine. More sensation does not automatically mean better results.

2. Consistency

A simple routine you use regularly will usually serve you better than a complicated routine you avoid because it feels overwhelming.

3. Support

Look for products that help your skin feel replenished and protected. Your routine should work with your skin rather than constantly trying to force it into submission.

Sometimes the feeling of being stuck isn’t only about skincare.

There are mornings when I wake up and my body feels stiff, my mind feels foggy and I can tell I’m carrying yesterday’s tension into a brand-new day.

Instead of immediately reaching for my phone or rushing into work, I try to give myself 10 to 15 minutes to come back into my body.

I begin with light yoga-inspired stretching—nothing strenuous or intimidating!. I slowly roll my shoulders, gently stretch my neck, reach through my sides and loosen my hips and lower back. I move in whatever way helps my body feel less guarded.

Then I add a little self-massage.

I may massage my shoulders, the back of my neck, my jaw or my scalp. Sometimes I use my hands to gently sweep across my face and down the sides of my neck. It isn’t about performing the movements perfectly. It’s simply a way of telling my body, You don’t have to brace yourself for the day.

These few quiet minutes help me feel more awake, present and connected to myself before I begin my skincare routine.

And I’ve noticed something important: when I slow down enough to listen to my body, I’m usually better at listening to my skin too.

A simple "unstuck" morning ritual:

On mornings when you feel stiff, overwhelmed or disconnected, try this:

  1. Take a few slow breaths before getting out of bed or reaching for your phone.

  2. Roll your shoulders forward and backward.

  3. Gently stretch each side of your neck without pulling or forcing.

  4. Reach your arms overhead and lengthen through both sides of your body.

  5. Move through a few easy stretches for your back, hips and legs.

  6. Massage your shoulders, jaw, scalp or any area where you tend to hold tension.

  7. Finish with your simple morning skincare routine.

This isn’t another list of things you have to accomplish perfectly... it's an invitation to begin the day more gently.

I created a special YouTube video where I guide you through the light stretching and self-massage movements I use when I wake up feeling physically “stuck.”  I hope it's helpful!

Remember, there's no prize for staying loyal to a skincare routine that no longer supports you.

Sometimes getting unstuck is less about finding one miraculous product and more about becoming quiet enough to hear what you need.

And sometimes, “boring” is exactly where the beauty begins!

The more you know, the more you glow!
