Don't Make These 10 Beauty Mistakes That Age You After 40

Hey Beautiful,

As you age it's natural that your skin shows more signs of aging, but that means your beauty routine needs to change, too, to reflect those changes.

But what can you really do about it?

Here are some common beauty mistakes that'll make you look older than you are if you're not careful and what you can do instead to look younger!

The most common beauty mistakes that age you after 40:

1. Ignoring Skincare:

One of the most significant mistakes is neglecting skincare. As we age, our skin's elasticity and hydration levels decrease, leading to fine lines and wrinkles. Skipping a dedicated skincare routine can accelerate these signs of aging. Feeling overwhelmed? Start with a good cleanser and our Whipped Olive Face Butterthat can be used in the AM or PM on your eyes, face and neck to improve hydration, and help you retain moisture for smoother, softer, younger looking skin.

2. Heavy Foundation:

Applying a thick layer of foundation can settle into fine lines and accentuate wrinkles. This cakey appearance can make you appear older than you are. We recommend starting out your makeup routine with something more hydrating and lightweight that also provides smoothing coverage to help you even out your skin tone and defuse the look of wrinkles, such as our Priming Duo.

3. Overdoing Powder:

Excessive use of powder can make your skin look dull and accentuate any dry patches or lines. Opt for a luminous finish instead. In fact, forget powder altogether (if you want!) and use a setting spray.

Bonus beauty tip! I like to spray mine in the palm of my clean hand and pat it over my face instead of spraying it on, especially around the eye area to keep eye makeup in place.

4. Incorrect Concealer Application:

Using a concealer that's too light or applying it improperly (i.e., around the outer part of your eye area where you see wrinkles when you smile) can draw attention to wrinkles and crow's feet. Regardless of what concealer you use, less is more. We recommend using a tinted primer first, then follow it up with a creamy concealer and only focus on where the darkness lies. Blend well for a more natural appearance. It can be as easy as pressing the concealer in with your fingers so it melts into your skin better.

5. Neglecting the Eyebrows:

Sparse or overly thin eyebrows can give a harsh and aging look. Defined and well-groomed brows frame the face and provide a more youthful appearance. Whether you use a brow gel with microfibersto fill in your sparse brows, a brow pencil (if you haven't got any brows) or a powder (most natural look), the choice is yours - but always remember to start applying your product in the middle part of your brow and work your way through it so that you don't get a heavy deposit that will actually make you look older.

6. Heavy Eye Makeup:

Dark, heavy eye makeup can make the eyes appear smaller and draw attention to fine lines and creases around the eyes. If your eyes are dark and/or hooded, stick with more neutral colors or matte shades and avoid using product inside the crease, especially with sparkle. Opt for eye shadow sticks if you're in a hurry because they're quick and more forgiving. We recommend using our Matte Beige Brow Highlighter under your brow bone to help give you an instant eye lift, and don't forget the dark corners of your eyes!

Bonus beauty tip: You can use your Matte Beige Brow Highlighter around your mouth to prevent your lip color from bleeding, especially if you have issues with lip color bleeding into your wrinkles.

7. Using the Wrong Lipstick Shades:

Dark or overly matte lip colors can make lips look thinner and emphasize fine lines around the mouth.

Bonus beauty tips! Be sure to care for your lips the way you do your face! Including a daily chapstick under your lipstick, using an overnight lip mask, and exfoliating your lips can help keep your lips soft and kissable at all times! Our lip kit is a great addition to any routine to easily keep your lips soft and smooth and works beautifully as a gift, too!

For a natural lip plumping effect, use Aquaphor over your lip color for a more youthful appearance!

8. Hydrating Mist:

When your skin gets dry, wrinkles become more visible. Carry a hydrating mist with you and spritz your face throughout the day to refresh your skin and keep your skin hydrated, especially during the summer months. Our Cucumber Toning Mist can be used to set your makeup or anytime you need an extra dose of hydration so that your skin stays happy!

Bonus beauty tip: When using your mist as a 'setting spray' store it in the fridge for better performance!

9. Stay Sun-Savvy:

Sun feels wonderful and we need our vitamin D, but it can also lead to signs of premature aging! Protect your skin from the sun's harmful UV rays all year round by using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 daily. Sun protection is crucial to maintaining your skincare results, too. 10. Hydration and Diet:

As mentioned above, dry skin means more visible wrinkles so hydrating from the inside out is a good holistic approach to your anti-aging beauty routine, but to optimize your anti-aging results you'll likely need to use a topical serum (before your moisturizer) that includes humectants, such as our Hyaluronic Acid Serum or Vitamin C + Correcting Serum to help hydrate your skin back to life!

Remember, the more you know the more you glow!
