Hyaluronic acid is a naturally produced clear substance that occurs in our body (benefiting skin-eyes-joints) and its main job is to retain water.
Fun fact: Did you know that the SKIN contains about half the amount of HA that’s in your body?
That's a lot.
Hyaluronic Acid production is more important as we age because it decreases over 50% after the age of 50.
Simply put, HA is important to maintain in order to retain (and help prevent) water loss for more youthful looking skin.
But there’s another secret about HA that I’m going to share with you today.
You can find HA just about anywhere - in supplements, face creams, serums, and even eye drops these days (Bio True just came out with this).
For more dramatic plumping results, you can even get HA injections.
Some anti aging HA benefits include an increase of moisture, wound healing, a reduction in the appearance of wrinkles, an increase in skin elasticity and plumping of the skin.
But not all types of HA are created equally.
Did you know there's low, medium and high molecular weight molecules to consider when choosing your HA?
In layman’s terms — lower molecular sizes, like the ones in our Hyaluronic Acid Serum, can penetrate your skin better but larger sizes sit on top to help lock in moisture.
Most over-the-counter products contain hyaluronic acid molecules that are too large to do any magic below the surface where the moisture is (in your dermis). But that doesn't mean they don't offer value.
You also have to consider your skin type, any skin conditions you have and the environment you’re in when choosing your HA serum. You'll also want to evaluate what else you're using with it.
While HA does offer hydration -- I recommend locking it in with a good moisturizer, like our Whipped Olive Oil Face Butter because it includes other emollients and oils which are especially beneficial in drier environments.
When in doubt about the HA that's right for you, pay close attention to how your skin feels after you use it.
Another secret that most people don't know about HA is that over-using won't help you. There’s no need to use HA more than once in AM / PM — you can use it in other products with a lesser concentration but I recommend using it up to two times a day (once in AM and/or PM) depending on your skin's needs.
Remember to always apply your products from thinnest to thickest, which means your HA serum will always go on first. I recommend applying HA on clean moist skin for best results.
Using other products, like our Youth Restoring Balancing Serum, with different humectants and antioxidants can be helpful too, if you wish to double down on your hydration efforts while balancing out your skin.
The goal is not to over love your skin with products but to shoot for balance. Sometimes that requires no products, sometimes it requires a few - it's all an individual choice based on your personal goals.
ps. for dry cracked heels, try this Urea 20% Cream with 2% Salicylic acid I found on Amazon that's personally helped me exfoliate the rough away and regain moisture to feel like a woman again! As a bonus, it came with overnight socks!
